First Takes is an exploration into the raw, unfiltered, pure connection that takes place between art and artist. All melodies are spur-of-the-moment piano improvisations that are being discovered as the recording is taking place. In each song you hear everything that was part of that moment. Noises from outside my studio, the creaking of a piano bench, an errant note, my children's laughter, and who knows what else. The nature of First Takes is rough and without polish, as is the case with an artist’s experience of discovery. Each song is an attempt to be completely new and boundless. What you hear is improvised and uncharted, yet at times beautiful discoveries naturally foster deeper exploration, and within the pursuit of newness, a familiar structure can quickly emerge out of an initial improvisation. However, there is no goal in any of these melodies. Like shooting stars, they are merely fleeting moments.
